Some state, city and county governments have searchable databases. They are usually very specific, though, so try to get all the information that you need before you start looking.

You can seach a good many court records for free, but you need to know the particular court to start with. Try looking for a website for the county you want to search in. There are usually links to the court system on the county’s web page, if they are accessible that way. More and more of them are going on-line all the time. Sometimes you have to register with the site to use it, even if there is no fee involved.
