if the public searches for it will it take a month a year or how long until it shows that it is pending.

In the U.S., patent applications are typically published at 18 months after filing. However, an applicant can file a nonpublication request if he/she does not plan on filing in foreign countries.
With a nonpublication request, the application will NOT be published until a patent issues, if at all. Of course, if the patent never issues, then the application can remain confidential.
